OVERALL in GOOD CONDITION. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents, and have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage.
Additional Information: A four-legged wooden game board with twelve pits. The form is that of a crocodile with a toothy, fearsome grimace. The patina on this game board shows wear from extensive use; the board has good age. It is in good condition and can still be used to play or display as a piece of art.
Such boards were used in the game known as mankala (or Mancala) in several African cultures including among the Dan. This game has been played by African peoples over the centuries. It is a family game that involves several players. Adults (men) and children play it indistinctly. The playing pieces consist of stones, seeds, or shells that the players distribute one by one into the play pits. The game has its own rules and the players can make their own rules as well. The championship goes to the player who will have the most seeds in his home pit after a certain number of games in a match. This game is still popular today. Mathematic skill is the key to become a famous player of Mancala.
